I have to tell you about our ‘poltergeist’, who I think is my stepfather. He married my mum when I was ten. He was always a great prankster. After I got married he would come to visit me sometimes on his way home from work. If I was out he would let himself in and rearrange things. The ornaments, the pictures or the furniture. After the children came he was a great granddad to them and continued to play jokes. The children grew up and got married and still he was there playing jokes. He died in 1983 when he was in his late sixties, but still he continues to play jokes.

My daughter was reading in bed and her light kept switching itself off. After several times of switching it back on she said, ‘Granddad, will you stop I’m trying to read,’ and it stopped.

We are always losing things. To give but one example, I bought a set of measuring cups and my grandson and I used them when making some cakes. We put them back in the ‘cooking cupboard’, but the next time I went to use them they were nowhere to be found. I turned the cupboard upside down but there was no sign of them. I checked with my grandson and he said we had definitely put them back where they were supposed to be in the cooking cupboard. He also turned the cupboard upside down . still not there. We went out and bought a new set and when we came home and put them away there was the old set sitting on the shelf in the front of the cooking cupboard.

I often smell his tobacco smoke in the evenings when I’m watching television, so I know he’s around. I can imagine him sitting on a cloud somewhere laughing his socks off!
